Marine Regulation

The Ashfords Marine and Transport team has an in depth knowledge of the Ports Industry and advise in relation to all aspects of marine regulation, including statutory harbour powers, harbour revision, empowerment and closure orders, harbour and pilotage dues, general directions, harbour directions and byelaws (including prosecutions), removal of vessels and wrecks, salvage, harbour works licensing, unsafe port cases, liability and Maritime Safety (both "MCA" and "HSE").

The Ashfords Marine and Transport Team acts for port and harbour authorities, marina operators, shipping companies, international banks, coastal developers and other marine businesses.

We are members of the British Ports Association and the UK Harbour Masters' Association.  Our industry expertise is recognised by Lara Moore's election to the UK Harbour Masters' Association's National Council.

We are currently acting on a number of high profile matters, the outcome of which will affect the Ports and Harbours Industry.  These matters include a harbour dues dispute and a matter involving use of harbour funds by a local authority.    Both these matters are closely linked to the interpretation and application of statutory harbour powers.  We routinely carry out statutory harbour power reviews, advising ports and harbours on their existing powers and whether any new or amended powers should be sought.
