Ashfords has advised investment management company, Ingenious, on the sale of five anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities to Ancala portfolio company Biogen, a leading owner and operator in this sector. Their annual electrical equivalent capacity is 300,000 MWh – enough energy to supply more than 100,000 average households with electricity per year.

Ashfords' energy and resource management team has extensive experience in these kind of projects and are well versed on the unique complexities and challenges that technologies such as AD provide.

Kim Hawkins, partner, led the Ashfords team with support from Brian Farrell, Ben Thomson and Emma Griffin-Davies. This adds to their growing reputation for being able to close out large, challenging institutional grade transactions in this space.

The transaction involved the simultaneous sale of multiple plants located across various locations in England and Scotland, therefore it brought a unique set of legal and practical challenges. The Ashfords team co-ordinated with all of the various professionals involved, to ensure that all workstreams were kept on track and delivered in line with everyone's expectations.

Ashfords deep sector knowledge of renewables and experience of acting for institutional funders allowed us to fully integrate into the sale process and advise in a predictive, solution-focused manner rather than on a reactive basis. Working closely with Ingenious as a trusted adviser ensured we could remain agile and focused throughout negotiations and help deliver the realisation it was looking for, even under challenging macroeconomic conditions.

Neil Forster, CEO of Ingenious, who led the transaction for Ingenious, said “Kim and the Ashfords team were excellent business partners on this complex transaction.  At all times they remained solution focused, efficient and highly flexible with exceptionally quick turnaround times.  The team was also a pleasure to work with.”
