Our specialist family team supports and encourages clients to consider alternative methods, such as mediation, to navigate challenging discussions when relationships break down. There are a number of options that can help avoid stressful and expensive court proceedings, one of which is mediation.
Mediation involves an independent third party who helps facilitate constructive discussions between separating couples. This neutral presence can be particularly valuable when direct communication has become strained or unproductive.
How does family mediation work?
- Mediation can be held remotely or in person and is conducted by a trained mediator. This is often, but not always, a family lawyer.
- Mediation provides a platform for discussing issues that arise in relation to family breakdown, whether the couple is unmarried, married, in a civil partnership or have children.
- Some mediators are specially trained to involve any children in discussions, if it is age-appropriate to do so. This ensures their wishes and feelings are heard and considered during the process.
It is also possible to have hybrid-mediation, where the individuals have their lawyers present as well and are involved in the disclosure process.
Our specialist team will discuss this with you and explore whether it is the most suitable method to help resolving the dispute between you. We have a number of trusted mediators we work closely with and will ensure you are provided with details of the mediators most suitable to your situation.
