Owen Saunders, previous IT apprentice and now desktop support analyst at Ashfords, completed a level 3 IT technician apprenticeship in December 2024. In a blog below, Owen reflects on his experience as an apprentice at our firm, sharing why he chose this particular route and provides advice for those looking to apply for an apprenticeship.

How does an apprenticeship programme work at Ashfords?

During my IT apprenticeship, I spent one day a week at Exeter College and four days a week in the Exeter office. Whenever I learnt something on the job, I would complete a learning journal through the college which supported my learning. At the end of the course it was pretty good to look back and see how much I had learned from day one.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over another route?

My journey involved switching from another career, and therefore making this transition, I wasn't fully confident I had the knowledge to take the leap straight into another role. The idea of grasping the basics before diving into a career of IT was appealing. I am also a very 'hands on' learner so being able to do the job and study was such a great way for me to learn.

How did you find balancing studying and work?

I personally found the balance was exactly right. If I needed extra study time before a project or an exam, everyone was very considerate and accommodating.

What’s great about working at Ashfords?

The people - everyone at Ashfords is very helpful and knowledgeable. I've always been able to ask for help and feel that all of my colleagues are open to share and offer their time.

What advice would you give to someone looking for/applying for an apprenticeship?

Go for it! For me, I found it was a great way to learn on the job without the pressure of having to know everything. Go in with an open mind, ask lots of questions and try to learn as much as you can working alongside your peers.
