A Home Office radio advert has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority for misleading EU citizens as to what they need to do to register under the EU Settlement Scheme and stay in the UK after Brexit.
The radio advert stated that all EU citizens need to apply was their 'passport or ID card and to complete an online form', but the ASA found that many applicants were also required to submit further documents, such as evidence of residence or of a family relationship.
The scheme has been open to EU, EEA and Swiss citizens since March of this year, with applications currently having to be made by 31 December 2020 if the UK leaves without a deal, and 30 June 2021 if it leaves with a deal.
