The UK adequacy decision process is progressing, with the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) now having adopted its opinions on the draft UK adequacy decisions.
It is a positive conclusion that the EDPB has identified key aspects of the UK data protection framework as being essentially equivalent to the EU framework and is another step closer to adoption of the final decisions, which would allow the continued free flow of personal data from the EU into the UK.
However there are clear concerns about the UK's freedom to depart from the GDPR standards in the future. This is confirmed by the EDPB Chair, Andrea Jelinek's statement that "we welcome the Commission's decision to limit the granted adequacy in time and the intention to closely monitor developments in the UK". It will be interesting to see what direction UK data protection law takes over the coming years.
