Mastercard's Carbon Calculator - understanding the carbon impact of your money

13.04.21

Fantastic innovation from Mastercard and Doconomy with their newly revealed carbon calculator, allowing customers to see information about the carbon emissions generated by their purchases so they can make more eco-friendly decisions.

"By embedding sustainability into the very fabric of our business, we can unlock the power of our network, reaching billions of consumers and partners, to create positive change for the environment” Jorn Lambert, Chief Digital Officer, Mastercard.

The last decade has seen a real pressure on companies to look internally at their carbon footprint and to adopt renewable energy and environmentally friendly practices and in particular for banks to look at their investment strategies and only make ethical and sustainable investments. However, in this drive to target the impact that large scale operations were having on the environment it was perhaps overlooked the role that organisations also play in helping to inform consumers and empower them to make environmentally friendly choices. Let's hope this is the start of an outward looking trend by organisations!
