Fly-tipping is not a new problem, but the statistics below indicate that it is a growing one.

Even more worryingly, the official council figures do not include incidents of dumping on private land, and there is generally widespread under-reporting which means that the true cost could be as much as £100-150 million a year.

The linked article includes some useful pointers on how to avoid fly tipping on your land, what to do if you think you are witnessing fly-tipping and some practical steps you can take if you fall victim to this crime.

Fly-tipping prosecutions are rare, and it often is the victims who have to bear the costs of properly disposing of the waste themselves once it is on their land. Waste law is complex, and failing to dispose of waste properly (even if it was illegally dumped on your land by someone else) can result in criminal liability - with unlimited fines and potential custodial sentences. As a result, it is important to establish a dialogue with your local authority and the Environment Agency to ensure you do not inadvertently end up committing a waste crime yourself. Our Business Risk and Regulation team are able to assist you with your environmental compliance and liaison with regulators where necessary.
