Law firm Ashfords LLP is delighted to sponsor a University of the West of England (UWE) Equity essay competition. Equity is a forward-looking community of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) student talent from all over UWE Bristol.

The comprehensive Equity programme incorporates coaching, workshops and networking events. National statistics indicate that BAME students often face a disadvantage in the jobs market after graduating. Equity is part of UWE Bristol’s commitment towards empowering BAME students to achieve great things after graduation.

The Equity essay competition is open to BAME students and recent graduates from any faculty at UWE Bristol. Individuals are required to submit a 1,500 word essay around one of three categories: (1) diversity and corporate social responsibility, (2) legal tech/artificial intelligence and (3) SMEs. The winner of each category will be awarded a cash prize of £2,000.

The competition has launched and the closing date for submissions is 11 October 2019. The worthy winners will be awarded at prize giving on 27 November which Ashfords’ Partner Rory Suggett will attend.

Rory Suggett said: “We are really pleased to be working closely with UWE and to be supporting the Equity student programme. The competition is a fantastic opportunity for students and recent graduates to  contribute to the debate on these current issues. Good luck to all the entrants.”

Xavier Baker, Assistant Law Lecturer at Bristol Law School commented: “The Equity programme is really excited to be collaborating with Ashfords LLP. The essay competition offers our BAME students a brilliant opportunity to challenge themselves, showcase their talent and engage with topics they may or may not be familiar with. We hope that this competition marks the beginning of a healthy relationship between Equity and Ashfords.”
