Meet the trainee - Georgia Dimick

What were you doing before you joined the firm?

Prior to joining Ashfords I owned my own e-commerce business in clothing distribution which I started in my first year of my undergraduate law degree. I developed and expanded the business for 3 years to the point where I had 6 employees working for me. I managed all aspects from accounts, advertising, customer service and stock management from China. I hugely enjoyed the experiences the business provided with me however I sold the company to focus my efforts on law.

The skills I had developed by running my own business in a very saturated market are directly transferable to a career in law and it gave me something entirely different to talk about in my training contract interviews.

Why Ashfords?

I initially was drawn to the firm when I worked for one of Ashfords commercial clients in their legal department. I was lucky enough to work directly with the Corporate and Employment Team at Ashfords during my time with the company, which gave me a real insight into the firm, the people and how they work.

I was then successful in securing a vacation scheme in the Bristol office which cemented my thoughts on the firm. The teams I was sat with for the week showed a genuine interest in me and all the other participants and made the effort to sit down and talk me through their files they were working on at the time. Ashfords is so friendly, welcoming and seemed passionate in the work they did and so I knew they were the right fit for me.

What has been your biggest challenge at Ashfords?

My biggest challenge was coming straight from university into a training contract with no prior legal experience. It is so true that learning the law and practicing the law are two very different things! Learning how to manage deadlines, heavy workloads and difficult tasks has been a steep learning curve. Luckily, however, there are so many people who are armed with a breadth of knowledge and who are always willing to help.

What is your favourite thing about working at Ashfords?

It sounds so cliché, but the people are definitely my favourite thing about working here. Everyone is so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable it genuinely makes it a pleasure to come to work each morning.

What is your aspiration?

Short term, to be able to say I am a NQ solicitor!

Long term would be to build my reputation and knowledge within my chosen area of law and be part of a successful team.
