The Vtech database hack on Black Friday has highlighted the need for all businesses involved in the retail sector to be wary of an increase in cyber attacks during this busy Christmas period.
Vtech's response to the hack has focused on the fact that no credit card details were compromised, but this response is lacking in terms of the personal data that has been stolen. With email addresses, and associated personal data, selling for more than credit card details on the dark web it is apparent that identity theft is a very attractive market for cyber criminals. This latest breach highlights the need for companies to ensure information security and privacy are a central consideration for all aspects of their business.
