Power of Attorney Registration Fee Refund - are you eligible?

If you registered a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) or Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) between April 2013 and March 2017, you could be entitled to a refund from the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG).

The Government has announced that those who paid a registration fee to the OPG during that period were charged more than necessary. This is because their operating costs had decreased but the application fee of £110.00 remained the same (until it was reduced to £82.00 on 1 April 2017).

The Government has launched a scheme that allows individuals to claim for a partial refund if you did not benefit from the reduced fees. How much you can claim depends on when you paid to register your Power of Attorney. Refunds will be in the region of £34.00 - £54.00 per document, plus interest at a rate of 0.5%.

To claim your refund, please click here to visit the government website and complete the online application form.

If Ashfords LLP registered an LPA on your behalf, please get in touch with your Ashfords contact to find out your LPA registration reference; this will assist the OPG in processing your application.

If the donor, or attorney, does not have access to the internet to make a claim, the OPG can be contacted by telephone. Their Refunds Helpline number is 0300 456 0300.

Your claim will take up to 12 weeks to be processed and if approved, will be paid automatically to your bank account (unless you make alternative arrangements with the OPG by calling their Helpline number).

Please note that whilst our team will be happy to assist with any queries you have, we cannot make the application on your behalf.
