Accidents at work

The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that 137 workers were killed in 2016/2017. Workers who are older are not necessarily better at avoiding high risk jobs as 37 of the 137 workers killed were over 60 years old. With an ageing working population, this is a particular concern.

The most common causes of death were being hit by a moving vehicle, falling from a height and being struck by a moving object.

In 2015/2016 there were also an estimated 621,000 workers who sustained a non-fatal injury at work. Common accidents at work are handling and lifting as well as slips and trips.

These statistics are striking but in fact there has been a reduction in the number of fatal and non-fatal injuries sustained at work - what has not changed is the trends between sectors.

Some sectors carry a much higher risk of injury, such as:

  • Agriculture
  • Construction
  • Manufacturing

If you have been involved in an accident at work that was not your fault and you have suffered an injury, you may be able to bring a claim for compensation. All employers have a responsibility to protect their employees, contractors and visitors from accidents and injuries and will have compulsory employers liability insurance.

If they fall below the duty of care that is owed to their employee they will be legally liable for any injury and loss suffered by that employee.

Compensation is divided into:

General Damages – a lump sum of compensation for the injury to compensate you for your pain and suffering.

Special Damages – these are your out-of-pocket expenses, e.g. loss of earnings, cost of care (provided for by family and friends or paid support), private treatment and cost of rehabilitation aids (i.e. prostheses) and medical and travelling expenses.
