Meet the Apprentice - Ross Cobley

Ross Cobley - IT Apprentice in our IT Team

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?
My main reason for deciding to do an apprenticeship was to pursue a career that I have always wanted and know I would enjoy. I knew I had to further my education, but University was not the path I wanted to take as I did not want the student debt. I also find that I learn better ‘on the job’ rather than ‘sitting and listening’ in a classroom environment which is why an apprenticeship is preferable for me.

What advice would you give to someone looking for / applying for an apprenticeship?
Do your research! There are so many options out there for apprenticeships now, so if you know roughly what sector you want to go into, you can research many different roles within that to see what is right for you. When you have decided on the area of work, I would also recommend doing some research about multiple companies that offer the apprenticeship as they may have different things to offer and can often have different advantages/ disadvantages.

What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship at Ashfords?
I really enjoy the freedom and independence you get as an apprentice. A lot of the time I am able to work independently and adhere to my own schedules. This includes day to day work, but also with exams and studying. However, when I do need support, it is always there and asking questions is encouraged.

What are the differences between school life and office life?
I think the main difference between school life and office life is how much more independent you are at work. In school, you always have lessons/ lectures at certain times and you are always told where to go and what to do. In an office, you will be managing your own workload and you will be responsible for making sure you hit any deadlines as well. Personally, this is my preferred method of working - so office life suits me well.

How did you find settling into office life?
I have really enjoyed settling in to office life at Ashfords. I really like the independence I have. Being part of a team who are very friendly and are always there to lend a hand when needed, makes the day more enjoyable.
