Meet the Apprentice - Beth Stevens

Beth Stevens - Legal Administrator Apprentice in our Corporate Team

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?
I got accepted to study Law at university but after doing my research I decided the apprenticeship route would be better suited to what I wanted and my style of learning. I learn more effectively from practical, hands on experience rather than sitting through classroom lessons. I also knew that the practical experience I would gain as an apprentice would be invaluable as I progress with my career. A legal apprenticeship route offers me the opportunity to become a solicitor without racking up huge debts.

What advice would you give to someone looking for / applying for an apprenticeship?
I would advise them to keep checking the government's apprenticeship website because there's such a wide range of areas offering apprenticeships not just trade related careers. If you know the profession that you'd like to go into then check business' websites or get in touch with them to enquire about apprenticeship roles. Apprenticeship salaries are not always as much as other entry level jobs, but you have to remember that the company is paying for your training and supporting your development. Not all companies pay the minimum apprentice wage (£3.50ph), many pay more and if you work hard and secure a permanent role with your employer, the salary will increase, if not before.

What do you enjoy most about the apprenticeship at Ashfords?
What I enjoy most is the support that you get, not only from the other apprentices but from your supervisors and everyone else in the firm. People are understanding to the fact that you're learning and may need more time to pick things up and that you'll always have lots of questions! People are always more than happy to read over my work and contribute to my apprenticeship, whether that's by supplying competency evidence or helping me to understand my assignments. Everyone is really supportive and they want you to do well and progress your career with Ashfords.
