Tod specialises in agricultural law dealing with farm contracting agreements, sales and purchases of land, farm tenancies, subsidies and quotas, farm co-operatives and environmental issues. He embarked on a legal career after over 20 years spent as a farmer. He graduated from Cambridge in 1975 with a degree in Land Economy. From 1975 to 1992, he managed the family 520-acre holding near Taunton. In 1992, he surrendered his 370-acre Crown Estate tenancy to pursue a legal career.
Having completed all his law examinations, he joined Ashfords as a trainee Solicitor in September 1994 and qualified in 1996. He still farms 50 acres as an owner/occupier. He was a founder member of the T.F.A. South West Regional Committee when it was established in the Winter of 1981/2. Together with Marshall Taylor, he reformed the Somerset Crown Tenants Association at that time. He was Chairman of the S.C.T.A. in 1988 and 1987. He continues to be an active member of both the Somerset N.F.U. and the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group.
