Jonathan is a Partner in Ashfords' Marine Team. He has experience is all aspects of marine related legal matters where he acts for a range of clients, primarily in the yachting industry, from insurers and private clients in dispute resolution to drafting sale, purchase, build and charter agreements for yachts, acting for international banks in financing super yachts worldwide and advising crew on employment disputes.
Before qualifying as a solicitor, Jonathan spent five years as a deck officer with BP Shipping then joined the Royal Navy where he specialised in navigation and warfare in submarines. He qualified and worked with Stephenson Harwood in London gaining experience in both Admiralty and commercial shipping disputes and salvage before moving to Shoosmiths where he headed the marine law group where he built up a practice dealing predominately in national and international yachting.
Jonathan is a member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, the Professional Yachtsman Association, the Nautical Institute and the Royal Institute of Navigation and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators where he arbitrates on a range of marine insurance disputes including yacht racing and collisions.
Jonathan has written a number of publications for the MCA super yacht captain's courses and for the International Institute of Marine Surveyors. He also lectures at the UK Sailing Academy, the BMF and various colleges and yacht clubs in both the UK and abroad on shipping and marine law and is a part time lecturer in shipping law at a number of UK Universities.
Jonathan Hadley-Piggin is a leading expert in high-end yacht work. He is deeply involved in the industry, working for a variety of clients ranging from insurers to private individuals. Dubbed a “yachting superstar” by interviewees, he is further praised for being “effective, efficient and reasonably priced.”
