John is a Partner and heads the Planning Team, he specialises in compulsory purchase, planning, environmental law and regeneration. He began his career as a lawyer in-house with two local authorities. This was followed by five years at City law firm, Ashurst Morris Crisp, during which he spent six months on secondment to an urban development corporation. He has been a partner with Ashfords since 1997.
John deals with a wide variety of matters including:
- planning and associated applications;
- Section 106 agreements;
- Environmental Impact Assessment;
- highways agreements;
- compulsory purchase orders and compensation;
- listed building and conservation area advice;
- planning and environmental appeals and inquiries;
- enforcement notices and prosecutions;
- lawful use certificates;
- judicial reviews of the decisions of public bodies;
- local plan objections.;
- Waste management licences and contaminated land; and
- Town and village green applications.
Relevant experience includes:
- planning agreement for mixed use development at Anchorwood Bank, Barnstaple;
- town green applications on land in Devises and Bristol;
- compulsory purchase of land in Ashford Town centre;
- a roof tax/tariff for Camborne Pool and Redruth;
- planning agreements for the Canary Wharf Development, Docklands;
- planning agreement for Cranbrook new settlement, east of Exeter;
- the redevelopment of the bomb-damaged Baltic Exchange, City of London;
- compulsory purchase of the Royal Armouries Site, Leeds;
- planning appeals and agreements for Coney Hill Hospital, Gloucestershire;
- a new settlement near Fareham in Hampshire;
- redevelopment of Stoke Park Hospital, Bristol;
- relocation of Newbury College; and
- new district general hospitals, at Tunbridge Wells and Swindon.
John speaks regularly at conferences, both regional and national and has had articles published in the Property Law Journal, Estates Gazette, Planning, New Start.
