Tiverton Triathlete tackles Brazilian challenge
Tuesday 7th February 2012Former Tiverton High School pupil and Olympic hopeful Simon Cooper is heading for Brazil to take part in a fast-paced international triathlon challenge. The 17 year old, who was crowned Sports Personality of the Year at Exeter College in 2010, is competing in Fast Triathlon Challenge Brazil, which takes place in Florianopolis on Sunday (February 12th).
The race, known as a "super super super sprint" due to being a third of Simon's usual distance - which is sprint distance, includes a 250 metre swim, a 4km bike ride, a 1.3km run. Simon will be one of a team of three taking part in three races of this distance, with just five minutes between each race.
Simon, who is on a quest for a medal at the 2016 Olympic Games, said: "This is an important event for me, not only giving me practice at competition level, but also giving me the chance to win a fair amount of money should the team do well. This would come in particularly useful for me as I am currently self funding."
Simon is receiving support from sports apparel brand Zoot, who provide him with his kits. Meanwhile, sports lawyers from leading local law firm Ashfords LLP, which has offices in Tiverton and Exeter, are supporting Simon by providing him with specialist legal advice.
Ashfords sports lawyer Rory Mac Neice said: "We are delighted to work with Simon, helping him to achieve his aims, including, hopefully, eventual Olympic success. It is excellent that he is dedicated to his athletic future and we wish him every success in Brazil."
Damon Street from Zoot said: "We're stoked to have Simon on the Zoot team. His raw talent, attitude and determination are making their mark and we wish him luck for the year kicking off in Brazil '
Simon recently left his Tiverton home to begin his A level studies at Loughborough College so that he can train at the NPC which is based at Loughborough University.
Simon, a County swimmer and National finalist, is part of the British Triathlon World Class Performance Olympic Talent Squad. He finished 2nd overall in the 2010 British Youth Triathlon Series and won the Junior World Biathle Championship (Swimming and Running) in Monaco 12 months ago.
