The Queen's Speech - proposals with implications for the construction industry
Thursday 3rd June 2010The coalition government's legislative programme set out in the Queen's Speech on 25 May 2010 includes changes to planning laws, a bill to encourage more private funding in schools and the construction of a new high-speed rail network.
It is not yet clear how major projects will be affected by the Decentralism and Localism Bill which will give councils more powers over housing and planning decisions, bringing an end to the Infrastructure Planning Commission, which was designed by the last government to speed major schemes through the planning process.
The Academies Bill will provide schools with the freedom to opt out of local authority control by becoming academies. This will remove the requirement to consult the local authority before opening an academy, thus simplifying and accelerating the process, from the acquisition of land, through designing the building to obtaining funding for construction.
The Energy Security and Green Economy Bill will promote low carbon energy production and the improvement of energy efficiency in homes and businesses.
More details should emerge over the coming months.
