Moving Home Checklist

Six weeks before the move
  • confirm your moving date remembering that Fridays and Bank Holidays are when removal firms are in high demand. If you are renting, notify your landlord of your moving date;
  • obtain written quotes from several removal and/or storage firms;
  • notify utilities companies of your departure;
  • make final arrangements where necessary for children to start school;
  • if you are moving to a new area, register with a new GP and dentist; and
  • start decluttering.
Two weeks before the move
  • obtain home contents insurance covering you from the day you move into your new home;
  • confirm moving details with chosen removal firm;
  • start packing non-essential items;
  • arrange with the Post Office for mail to be re-directed from the day you move into your new home;
  • notify relevant companies of your move - click here for list of people to inform;
  • arrange for telephone company to transfer your telephone number to your new home or arrange for a new connection;
  • notify local council of your move for payment of Council Tax; and
  • find out if you need any parking permits and apply where necessary.
One week before the move
  • check that utilities will be connected at your new home and arrange for the account to be transferred into your name from the day you move into your new home;
  • ensure you have adequate prescription medicines to cover the moving period; and
  • if possible, arrange care for your children and pets on removal day.
Two days before the move
  • pack a "Survival Kit" - a bag with change of clothes, night clothes and essential toiletries. Other items which it may be useful to include in the kit are light bulbs, toilet rolls, scissors, a small toolbox, matches, paper towels, sticky tape and a list of important telephone numbers. It also may be handy to include a box of cleaning equipment;
  • arrange for refreshments and dinner for moving day, remembering that your cooker may not be connected. Don't forget plates, cups and cutlery; and
  • do last minute laundry.
Moving  Day
  • defrost fridges and freezers;
  • have personal possessions to hand i.e. passports, driving licences, jewellery and money;
  • take a note of the final meter readings for water, gas and electric for both your old and your new home;
  • be ready to fully vacate the property and take all keys to the estate agent by 1pm;
  • make sure all items that were included in the sale are there. If anything is missing, contact your solicitor; and
  • finally, at the end of the day, collapse on the sofa, order a takeaway and crack open a bottle of champagne!
