Bankruptcy tourism to be addressed at breakfast briefing
Tuesday 1st November 2011
The issue of "bankruptcy tourism" will be addressed in breakfast briefings to be held in Bristol and London this month. The phrase refers to nationals of other European countries travelling to England to make themselves bankrupt, thus avoiding the more undesirable consequences of bankruptcy in their own jurisdiction.
The talks are being run by the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3) and are taking place at Ashfords' offices in Bristol on 14th November and at Nabarro's offices in London on 25th November. Speakers include Alan Bennett, a Partner in the Insolvency team at South West law firm Ashfords LLP and regional committee member of the R3, and Stefan Ramel at Guildhall Chambers.
Bankruptcy tourists can take advantage of the benefits of bankruptcy by establishing a Centre of Main Interest in England or Wales. The briefing will focus on the latest developments and cases that have considered COMI for personal or corporate insolvency, and focus on the potential danger areas and disadvantages of the deliberate migration of a business' COMI.
Registration and breakfasts start at 8.15am and the talks will run from 8.45am to 10am. The briefing constitutes 1.25 CPE hours.
