Ian is a Senior Partner in the Dispute Resolution Team. He was Chief Executive of Ashfords from 2006 to 2012. Ian acts for commercial clients over a range of complex and contentious issues. His experience includes a growing amount of Commercial Court and Arbitration work for clients abroad where English law applies. In addition Ian has been a mediator since 1996. He regularly acts as a mediator in various forms of commercial disputes from large financial claims to family business and partnership breakdowns. Previously, Ian acted as Independent Assessor (a personal appointment) in respect of Equitable Life Pension claims undertaking a wide range of issues over approximately 450 cases.Read more
Mandatory mediation - a worthwhile experiment?
On Thursday 1st May 2014 Ashfords' London office hosted a presentation and debate on the European Mediation Directive which, in the six years since its adoption, has still not yet solved the ‘EU Mediation Paradox’ - for despite its proven and multiple benefits, mediation in civil and commercial matters is still used in less than 1% of the cases in the EU.Read more

Arbitration or injunction: restraining foreign proceedings
In Bannai v Erez (Trustee in Bankruptcy of Eli Reifman) the High Court refused to set aside anti-suit injunctions obtained against an Israeli Trustee in Bankruptcy because a valid arbitration clause existed.
