William Partridge (1822 -1884)

William Partridge was educated at Blundell’s (the famous Tiverton boarding school featured in 'Lorna Doone' the romantic novel, by R.D Blackmore). Partridge was admitted as a solicitor in 1845 and carried on a legal practice in Tiverton in partnership with George Woodbury Cockram and then his son George Edward Cockram until three years before his death.

He was Magistrates Clerk, Co-founder of the Tiverton and North Railway Company, agent for Pelican Life Assurance Office. In 1863 he was Principal Clerk to the Grand Western Canal Company and in 1870 he was elected Clerk to the Land and Assessed Tax Commissioners. Partridge was part of the energetic group which proposed the removal of Blundell's School to a new site and the building of Second and Third Grade schools in Tiverton.

He continued his interest in education by becoming Clerk to the Governing body of Tiverton Middle Class Schools and was made Governor of his alma mater, Blundell's School, being present in 1880 at the laying of the cornerstone of the new school building.  He was also a Councillor of West Exe Ward.
