The work you will do
Ashfords' Trainees get involved in all aspects of the work we do with our clients.
What you will do on a day to day basis will depend on the department you are working in, and the level of responsibility we feel you are able to cope with.
As a Trainee, you can expect to do the following things during your Training Contract:
- Meet clients and sit in on meetings of all types;
- Do research and prepare notes which clients will be able to understand;
- Deal with basic telephone and email enquiries;
- Prepare documents for clients;
- Help make sure that case deadlines are met;
- Manage paper and electronic files for other fee earners; and
- Go to court to sit behind Counsel, or even do small hearings on your own.
What type of work have you been involved with in your Training Contract?
"I worked on lots of small matters in my first seat, Intellectual Property, and had direct contact with clients. In my second seat, Employment, I was involved in large tribunal claims, mainly acting for employers. I have had the opportunity to draft a number of documents in both seats, including Confidentiality Agreements and Employment Contracts. I particularly enjoyed working on the Employment Tribunal cases. I was responsible for organising documents, helping to meet disclosure deadlines and preparing bundles."

Have you had a chance to deal directly with clients?
"I have had lots of opportunities to deal directly with clients, both face-to-face and over the phone. In my first seat I accompanied clients to a court hearing with a barrister, which was really interesting. I have also attended several meetings with clients and, on a couple of occasions, I have even met clients and taken instructions by myself."
