Where a family member or partner has tragically died in an accident that was not their fault, there may be a police investigation and prosecution. If the accident happened at work the Health & Safety Executive ("HSE") will carry out a careful review and investigation.
This may lead to fines and even prison sentences against those found to be to blame, and may help you find answers concerning why the accident happened.
A civil claim for compensation is a separate legal remedy. It can often be brought even if the police or HSE find no reason to prosecute anyone.
This area of law is complex. Evidence can be gathered from the police and from the Coroner's inquest.
