Road Safety - Be Bright be Seen

Monday, 2nd November 2015

As the nights draw in and the clocks have changed, it is a good time to remind ourselves of the 'best practice' for being seen when out and about at night in order to keep safe.

Think! Are running an excellent campaign for children called 'Be Bright be seen' with resources on their website for all age ranges from preschool through to 16.

This campaign reflects Rule 3 of the Highway Code which states that you should help other road users to see you. "You should wear or carry something light-coloured, bright or fluorescent in poor daylight conditions. When it is dark, use reflective materials such as armbands, sashes, waistcoats, jackets and footwear, which can be seen by drivers using headlights up to three times as far away as non-reflective materials".

The availability of reflective clothing and accessories is wider than ever, so there should be something to suit everyone.

As well as being seen, we should also follow the Green Cross Code when crossing the road:

A - First find a safe place to cross

B - Stop just before you get to the kerb

C - Look all around for traffic and listen

D - If traffic is coming, let it pass

E - When it is safe, go straight across the road – do not run.

And don't forget that if there is no pedestrian crossing nearby, cross the road near a street light so that traffic can see you more easily.

Walking and cycling must continue to be promoted as healthy, enjoyable activities. The challenge is to give young people the skills, understanding and confidence to deal with traffic safely as they become independent road users.

With the right equipment/clothing and sensible behaviour, the dark doesn't need to keep us indoors or in our cars!
