Private Equity
Private equity is medium to long term, high risk / high reward investment in private companies. Private equity investors are mainly specialist private equity firms and 'business angels' (high net worth individuals) who invest in shares of a company, advise in its development and aim to realise a profit on a sale, merger, IPO or refinancing.
Venture Capital
Venture capital is a type of private equity capital provided to start-up and emerging businesses. Venture capital providers tend to be funds established by a number of investors (such as investment banks and high net worth individuals). Venture capitalists ('VCs') fund ventures which are often high risk (and thereby not considered for standard bank loans) in return for an equity stake and input into the management of the company. VCs usually receive their compensation by way of annual management fees and a share of the company's profits.
