Ashfords donates a tonne of books

Introduction

Illiteracy is demeaning and affects about 800 million people worldwide. Those who can't read lose personal independence and can easily become victims of manipulation and poverty. It is virtually impossible to break from the poverty cycle if you cannot read or write.

With this in mind, Ashfords working in partnership with Rotary Club of Exmouth has donated a metric tonne of books to Book Aid International, from where transportation has been secured to deliver the books to the University of Makerere.

The books, new, would cost the University an impossible £12,000.

At the university the books will assist in a programme to promote literacy in developing countries by creating reading and learning opportunities for disadvantaged people, in order to help them realise their potential and eradicate poverty.

Commenting on the programme, Ian Daniells, Chief Executive of Ashfords said, "At Ashfords we have a strong commitment to the communities in which we operate – more usually in our local area – but also more broadly oversees to those less fortunate then ourselves. We are delighted to be working alongside the Rotary Club of Exmouth to donate a large quantity of legal books to assist further education in Uganda."

Helen Watson, Information Services Manager at Ashfords who worked hard to get the books boxed and ready for transportation added, "The content of many books is now available electronically and we no longer have a use for the printed format, but it great to see that through a little hard work and the generosity of Ashfords and the Rotary Club of Exmouth these books can be made available to help the education of others."
