Introduction

Ashfords' specialist Charities lawyers advise upon charity law and governance as well as employment law and taxation advice and handle property transactions and litigation for third sector clients. Head of Department, Geoff Trobridge previously worked for the Charity Commission where he dealt with all aspects of charity law and, in particular, issues of charitable status, the drafting, interpretation and amendment of governing documents - trust deeds, memoranda and articles of association, Royal Charters and statutes - mergers, closures, powers of investment, total return, common investment funds, trading subsidiaries, charity proceedings, governance and VAT mitigation schemes.

Recent work undertaken includes:

  • The transfer of the management of St John's School Sidmouth to  new charity trustees.
  • Advice upon objects and governance for EDP Drug and Alcohol Services
  • Advice upon the status and funding of voluntary aided schools
  • The formation of a charity and subsequent transfer to it of a health education project for a higher education institution
  • Advice upon governance and property transactions to a regeneration and conservation charity
