Age Discrimination case could herald a landmark decision

Introduction

One of the region's first Employment Tribunal cases to be brought on the grounds of age discrimination laws will be heard in Exeter later this month.

And, whilst the case of claimant 'Oliver Overhill' versus employers 'Trendy FM' is expected to herald a landmark decision, it's actually just a realistic training exercise to show local employers what could happen to them when the law really changes later this year.

From October, age discrimination in the workplace becomes illegal and will affect everything from recruitment to retirement, so it's crucial that employers prepare for the big change.

Organised by leading local law firm Ashfords and Human Resources consultants Penna Plc, the 'mock tribunal' is being staged at Ashford House, Exeter on Thursday 18 May with the aim of bringing the complexities of this new legal minefield to life.

The new law on age discrimination is likely to be a trap for the unwary and affects all businesses. Human Resources professionals and employers across the South West will be attending.

The event will not only offer delegates the chance to see how an Employment Tribunal works first hand, but also allows them to take part in the tribunal in a friendly, fun and interactive way.

Delegates will learn about the existing and proposed laws governing age discrimination and grievance procedures which come into force on 1 October.

After hearing the evidence, delegates will assist with the cross-examination of witnesses, discuss the case over a buffet supper and finally vote on the tribunal's decision.

Rhiain Lewis, partner and Head of Employment Law at Ashfords, said: "Talks and seminars can never replicate the process of actually seeing an Employment Tribunal taking place. We decided that staging a mock tribunal was the best way to get the message across to employers about the new age discrimination laws.

"The tribunal will show employers how to identify the many pitfalls, and our team of skilled advisors will be on hand to give practical tips and explain the process whilst using role play in the mock tribunal itself."

The 'mock tribunal' hearing will take place on Thursday 18 May 2006 at Ashfords Solicitors, Ashford House, Exeter from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm. Registration from 5.30pm.

The cost of the event is £35 including VAT.
